Serge brings over three decades of strategic leadership and corporate governance expertise to Zilch, gained from his pioneering work in payment technologies aimed at promoting financial inclusion. He has founded, listed, and exited multiple businesses, while patenting various technological innovations. His career includes the development of COPAC for Visa and the creation of the world’s largest ATM switch in the late 1980s. Widely regarded as a blockchain pioneer, Serge also founded NET1, a Nasdaq-listed payments company that was valued at over $2 billion at its peak.
As the CEO and Chairman of NET1, Serge played a key role in designing South Africa’s Social Welfare grant payment system, which served over twenty million beneficiaries and reduced fraud. After retiring from NET1 in 2017, he joined Zilch to assist Philip in designing, funding, and commercialising the company. Today, Serge continues to support Zilch in his role as non-executive Chairman.
